What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is relatively a new martial art. It is based in grappling and the aim of the practitioner is to take and dominate their opponent to the ground.
Practicioners learn how to apply chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations to allow them to surrender opponents without causing any harm.
It has gained a lot of popularity after many successful performances from various BJJ practinioners in the mixed martial arts arena.
It is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
BJJ first appeared in Cyprus in the late 90s, when Pantelis Panagidis returned from the USA and transferred his knowledge from Renzo Gracie himself, being one of his first students in New York.
Renzo Gracie Academy
Renzo Gracie is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and a Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioner. He is a proud member of the Gracie family. He is one of the most respected representatives and one of the most influential practitioners of the art throughout the world.
He is well known for his contribution in martial arts, as well as for helping many others in becoming elite athletes, world class coaches and professional fighters.
He is consider to be one of the best coaches of the modern era. His academy Renzo Gracie Academy in New York is regarded as one of the best gyms in the world, with notable students in BJJ, submission grappling and MMA.
He has affiliates all over the world, including Renzo Gracie Cyprus under the supervision of Pantelis Panagidis.
Pantelis Panagidis started practicing Jiu jitsu while he was doing his studies in New York in the mid-90s. He was one of the first students of Renzo Gracie. When he returned to Cyprus he opened his first academy Aspida Team Renzo Gracie. He was the first professor of BJJ in Cyprus and one of the first in Europe. He has affiliate academies in Cyprus, Greece and Russia.
